SubjectsKey Skills

Key Skills programme provides a practical, confidence-building pathway for students who have not yet achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and/or Maths. Designed as an alternative to traditional A Levels or vocational courses, this programme develops essential workplace skills while preparing students for progression to further education, apprenticeships, or employment.

Inclusivity sits at the heart of our approach. We use flexible teaching and learning methods tailored to meet individual needs, with a curriculum personalised to reflect local career and training opportunities in sectors including retail, hospitality, social care, and the voluntary sector.

Course Outline

Students work towards Edexcel Pearson Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths, applying literacy and numeracy skills confidently in everyday situations and workplace contexts. Through practical activities and independent learning, students develop their reading, writing, listening, speaking, and problem-solving abilities.

Beyond Functional Skills, students gain valuable workplace qualifications:

  • ASDAN Personal Finance & Leadership – developing budgeting, planning, and leadership capabilities

  • First Aid in the Workplace Level 3 – including CPR, AED use, and paediatric first aid certification

  • Pre-driving Theory – preparing students for future driving success

  • Customer Communication – building effective professional communication skills

Work experience is embedded into the programme, with students spending one day per week in a real workplace setting. Students maintain a reflective journal throughout their placement, applying classroom learning in professional environments. The programme operates on a two-week timetable delivering 20 hours of teaching per week across both Year 12 and Year 13.

All Saints’ Academy has helped me grow into a confident and self-assured student. The support I have received from staff, along with excellent extracurricular opportunities such as whole-Academy productions, has been invaluable.
